Reach, 2022

gold leaf

Reach is a living installation of gold leaf applied to the gallery wall. Conceived by Laura Eldret, the work is enacted by young people who use thin sheets of gold to create an index of their furthest reach. The installation, like children themselves, is always growing as more and more imprints are added. Gold leaf here is a symbol of the everyday magic of the imagination and the alchemy of creativity. The application of gold leaf is a performative gesture towards children’s future selves, their dreams and ambitions. Gold is a shimmering material, which changes as the light moves through the space. As an abstract, decorative form, the work is open to diverse interpretations.

Reach originated as a site specific work at Milford Academy School, Nottingham. It was included in Nottingham Contemporary Summer 2022 exhibition This is Tomorrow.
