artist’s rider

Laura Eldret – artist, researcher and organiser
she/her (call me Laura rather than pronouns if possible)

This rider is intended to share my values, conditions and access requirements prior to working together.

My approach and values:

  • I work in translocal ways, responding to the specificities of place and/or individuals and communities, with proposals intended as a starting point that develop nuances as the work unfolds.
  • My practice takes a socio-ecological, pluralist approach. What may appear as over-complexity reflects an intentional way of working that resists monocultures and the enactment of broken structures, cultivating projects as rich constellations of communities, perspectives, and relations.

Working with others:

  • My practice engages with commoning as a non-hierarchical way of organising and understanding project economics beyond the financial. It is an equitable approach that includes enfolding institutions into the process and resists ego-centric framings.
  • My way of working often involves collaboration, co-production, and co-creation with multiple individuals and communities. As a result, crediting and attribution may differ from standard models and should be built into project processes from the outset to ensure consent and accurate acknowledgements.

Sustainable approaches:

  • To support clear and sustainable working conditions, I ask that one person within the commissioning organisation is appointed as my key liaison, collating and consolidating requests, to reduce the undue labour associated with liaising across multiple contacts as a solo artist.
  • As a project evolves, I find it helpful to have regular check-ins, particularly to address any issues that may arise and to avoid defaulting into work-late / power-through / crisis-mode approaches.
  • My production choices prioritise materials that are reusable, recycled, organic, local, regenerative, borrowed, energy-efficient, and non-toxic, informed by what is possible rather than abstract wants.

Access Needs:

I am adaptable and enjoy working across a range of situations. Optimal conditions include acknowledging emotional labour, providing quiet breakout spaces, offering both written and verbal communication, and building timelines that allow for deadline buffers and scheduled downtime.

Additional access needs are generally context-specific and to be established at the outset of a project. This includes planning/ fundraising for access costs for collaborators, and participants, and ensuring early communication to me of participant and collaborators needs so access is embedded within the project rather than as an add on.

I have caring responsibilities this means:

  • Please allow reasonable time when scheduling or rescheduling as I tend to more than my own schedule.
  • I take a vocational approach to my practice; therefore, my children may accompany me to certain work engagements.

This rider sets out starting points for shared understanding and mutually sustainable ways of working to be negotiated as part of working together. Please feel free to share this with others.
