Haunts

19 Sept - 3 Oct 2026

Haunts is an installation that explores the North Dorset Trailway as a place shaped by its repeated use by humans and non-humans. Inspired by the forms of rocks and stones of landscapes, lucky charm bracelets, story beads, Dorset talismans, and the trailway map, the installation will take the form of ‘beads’ co-created by Laura Eldret and members of local communities including students from Yewstock School, and volunteers and visitors from Dorset Lavender Farm Project, Bere Marsh Farm and other local residents to the North Dorset Trailway.

The ‘beads’ of the installation are motifs drawn from stories gathered along the trailway. They reflect on the trailway as something that is a continuous site of change, formed by its histories and continues to be a favoured haunt for many. As well as what can be seen, the installation is informed by the unseen of the trailway – hidden or nocturnal creatures, underground remnants and remains, the dead as well as the living.

Haunts is an exhibition resulting from Laura Eldret’s residency of the North Dorset Trailway this summer, produced by Dorset Visual Arts and supported by funding from Dorset Council’s Community and Culture Project Fund. The installation is inspired by time Laura spent walking the trailway, meeting people on her way, and the many individuals who have shared their own stories and creations in conversations and workshops.

A finale event will take place at the Threshing Barn at Bere Marsh Farm on September 19 between 1-3pm with a communal threading together of ‘beads’ resulting in the exhibition. Open Fridays and Saturdays or by appointment

Residency public sessions include Glitch and Glow and Niches
